What is sheet metal good for, and why Japan?

It suits enclosures, chassis, brackets, panels, covers and housings, in steel, stainless, aluminium and occasionally copper or brass. If your part is essentially a formed flat sheet rather than something cut from solid, this is the process.

Japanese fabricators earn their reputation on consistency and finish quality: clean cuts, repeatable bend angles, tidy welds, and finishing that actually matches the specification. For equipment enclosures, instrument housings and anything a customer will see or touch, that matters. As always, they are not the cheapest source for simple high-volume brackets, and they do not chase that work.

Why is this a good entry point at low volume?

Because the tooling barrier is low. Cutting is done by laser or punch from a digital file, and bending uses standard press-brake tooling, so there is no dedicated die to fund the way there is in metal stamping. That means a prototype or a batch of ten is a normal request rather than an awkward one.

The trade-off is that per-part cost stays relatively flat as volume rises, since there is no tool to amortise. At high volume for a simple part, stamping eventually becomes cheaper. The crossover depends on the part, so if you expect real volume, ask both a fabricator and a stamper to quote.

  • A 3D model of the finished part, with a flat pattern or the bend table, because the fabricator needs to know how it unfolds.

  • Bend radii and tolerances, remembering that sheet metal tolerances are looser than machining and that over-tight tolerances raise cost quickly.

How do I keep the cost down?

Design for the process. Keep bend radii consistent and use standard tooling where you can, avoid features too close to a bend, allow generous tolerances everywhere that is not functionally critical, and reduce the number of separate welded pieces if a single folded part will do. Nesting matters too: a part that packs efficiently into the sheet wastes less material.
