What are you actually ordering?
This is the question that most confuses first-time buyers. Bare PCB fabrication is the board on its own. PCB assembly, or PCBA, is components soldered onto that board. Box-build is the assembly plus its enclosure and everything else that makes the finished unit. They are often different suppliers with different quotes, so be explicit about which one you need. Most people searching for "PCB assembly" want PCBA, a populated board, and this guide is written for that.
Turnkey or consigned?
The second decision is who buys the components. In a consigned arrangement you supply some or all of the parts, which gives you control over critical or long-lead components but puts the logistics and shortages on you. Many buyers run a hybrid, consigning the critical parts and letting the assembler buy the rest.
Why source PCB assembly from Japan?
Reliability. Japanese assemblers are strong where the board cannot be allowed to fail, in automotive, industrial, and medical electronics, and are used to building to a high IPC workmanship class with disciplined process control and inspection. If your product is reliability-critical or safety-relevant, that consistency is the reason to be here.
