What can I source from Japan?
The full chain. Japan produces optical glass itself, which is unusual and matters because glass availability drives lead times, along with precision-polished spherical lenses, prisms, windows and filters, moulded aspheric lenses in glass and plastic, thin-film coatings, and assembled and aligned optical modules.
The buyer base is demanding, industrial imaging, measurement instruments, semiconductor equipment, medical devices and cameras, so suppliers are used to tight specifications and to being asked for evidence rather than reassurance.
Polished or moulded?
Volume and geometry decide.
Precision polishing suits spherical surfaces, prisms and windows, low to moderate volumes, and very tight tolerances. There is no expensive tool, so prototypes are viable, but each part carries real labour.
Moulding, in glass or plastic, suits aspheres and high volume. It requires an expensive mould with a long lead time, and only makes sense once volume amortises it. Plastic moulded optics are lighter and cheaper but limited in thermal stability and available materials; glass moulding costs more and performs better.
If you are prototyping an asphere, a polished or diamond-turned prototype is often the sensible route before committing to a mould.
What should the drawing contain?
This is where most overseas inquiries fall short, because a mechanical drawing does not carry the information an optics maker needs.
- Material and grade, since optical glasses differ in index, dispersion and availability, and an exotic glass can dominate your lead time.
- Radius of curvature, centre thickness and diameter, with tolerances.
- Surface figure and irregularity, usually expressed in fringes or waves at a stated wavelength.
- Centration or wedge tolerance, which is critical in assemblies and frequently omitted.
- Surface quality, the scratch and dig specification, and the clear aperture over which it applies.
- Coating specification, including type, the wavelength range, angle of incidence and required performance.
- Bevels, edging and any mounting features.

Coatings and testing
Coating is often a separate specialist step, sometimes done in-house and sometimes subcontracted, and it can be a significant part of both cost and lead time. Specify the performance you need across the wavelength range and angle you actually use, not a generic description such as "anti-reflective."
